Seas of Clouds (Unkai)
Viewing a sea of clouds is a bucket list activity in the summer through fall
Unkai, or "sea of clouds," refers to when a valley is filled with low altitude clouds that can be seen from above from a high elevation. Seeing the rolling waves of clouds from above will clearly illustrate how the phenomenon got its name. The Aso Region boasts an ideal geography and climate for this phenomenon to occur, making it one of the best unkai viewing spots in all of Japan. In the early summer and fall mornings, unkai can be viewed in various places around Aso. We recommend you rise early and try to catch a glimpse of the unkai before having breakfast.
