Mt. Tawarayama

An easily accessible scenic location with a view of the entire Aso area

Mt. Tawarayama is located along Prefectural Road 28. A short walk up a mountain trail from the roadside parking lot will bring you to an observation deck at 710 m elevation. The location of this spot couldn't be better, as it provides a view of every landmark in the Aso Region, including the Kuju Mountain Range, Komezuka Hill, the five peaks and outer ring of the Aso Caldera, and the Aso and Nango valleys. You can even see a sea of clouds if you're lucky!　The trail to the peak of the mountain is well cared for, so you can also go trekking from here.

It's also great for sky sports!

As Mt. Tawarayama is conveniently located near a major road and the weather is often quite windy, it is a popular launching point for paragliders and other sky sports. If the weather is right, you may get to see colorful parachutes gliding down the mountainside. The area is also full of beautiful natural scenery, huge windmills, and various educational, sightseeing, and activity spots that are fun for the whole family.
